Event Outline

Olympus hosted the “Tohoku (Northeastern Japan) Online Study Tour 2021: Ten Years Since the Earthquake—Protect What Is Precious through Disaster Readiness,” in partnership with the NPO Dialogue for People. The aim of this event was to give young people an opportunity to learn disaster prevention techniques that will help minimize damage in the event of a natural disaster. Marking the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the online event was led by photojournalist Natsuki Yasuda and attended by 65 secondary-school and college students, who participated in group discussions after listening to local storytellers from Tohoku sharing their thoughts and debating what the affected areas are like now. A tremor with an intensity of 6+ on the Japanese seven-stage seismic scale, believed to be an aftershock from the earthquake ten years ago, hit Fukushima and Miyagi the day before the event. This tremor highlighted the importance of regular earthquake drills and made the students even more eager to learn measures that can be quickly administered to enhance preparedness.
